Israel said on Sunday it had left only one brigade while withdrawing more troops from southern Gaza. Israel said it and Hamas had sent a team to Egypt for fresh talks on a possible ceasefire in the six-month conflict. Israel has been reducing the number of troops in Gaza since the beginning of the year and is under increasing pressure from its ally the United States to improve the humanitarian situation, especially after the killing of seven aid workers last week. A military spokesman did not elaborate on the reasons for the troop withdrawal or the numbers involved, but Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said the troops would prepare for future operations in Gaza. Both Israel and Hamas confirmed that they were sending delegations to Egypt. Hamas wants a deal to end the war and withdraw Israeli forces. Israel said that after any ceasefire, it would overthrow Hamas, which it has vowed to destroy. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that there will be no agreement without the release of the hostages and that he will not bow to international pressure. Hamas says a deal should include freedom of movement for residents across the Gaza Strip. According to Israeli figures, more than 250 hostages were taken and approximately 1,200 people were killed during the October 7 attack by Hamas. According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, more than 33,100 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli attack. About 130 hostages are still being held in Gaza. When asked about the army's withdrawal from the enclave, Israel's chief of general staff, Herzi Halevi, told reporters that the army is adapting to a long war. According to a statement from her office, Gallant said in a meeting with military officials that military forces are being recalled and are preparing for their next mission.
