Historic Bullock Cart Races Draw Massive Crowds at Kila Raipur Rural Olympics 2026

Thousands of spectators, particularly young people, packed the stadium on the second day of the Kila Raipur Rural Olympics 2026, as the revival of the iconic bullock cart races drew overwhelming public response and electrifying energy at Punjab’s celebrated rural sporting festival.
Punjab Legislative Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan presided over the day’s events alongside State Media Head Baltej Singh Pannu, as attendees from across the state gathered to witness a vibrant showcase of traditional rural sports. The much-anticipated bullock cart races, revived after a 12-year hiatus, emerged as the main attraction, eliciting roaring cheers from packed stands and rekindling nostalgia among spectators.
Apart from the traditional races, the Rural Olympics featured a diverse lineup of competitions, including hockey matches, kabaddi bouts, shot put events, 100-meter sprints, tug of war contests, long jump competitions, and the popular Bazigar show. Families, farmers, youth groups, and visitors filled the venue, creating a festive atmosphere marked by enthusiasm and community spirit.
Addressing the gathering, Speaker Sandhwan described the return of bullock cart racing as a historic milestone enabled by legislative reforms and strengthened animal welfare safeguards under the Punjab Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Punjab Amendment) Act, 2025. He emphasized that traditional sporting events play a crucial role in preserving Punjab’s cultural heritage while encouraging younger generations to reconnect with their roots.
Sandhwan expressed hope that rural games would motivate youth participation, helping steer them away from drugs and excessive digital distractions. He underscored the collective responsibility to safeguard Punjab’s cultural legacy at a time when social media trends increasingly influence lifestyle choices.
Earlier, Baltej Singh Pannu commended the organizers and the massive turnout, calling the festival a resounding success. He stated that the resumption of bullock cart races has infused renewed festive spirit across Punjab and restored the glory of the Rural Olympics as a symbol of rural strength and cultural pride.
“Under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s vision, we have successfully revived this iconic event with proper safeguards. The enthusiasm witnessed today reflects the deep emotional connection people share with these traditions,” Pannu said.
Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain, Additional Deputy Commissioner Amarjit Bains, SDMs Jasleen Kaur Bhullar and Upinderjit Kaur Brar, Assistant Commissioner Dr. Pragati, and District Sports Officer Kuldeep Chugh were among the prominent dignitaries present at the event.
