Under the direction of Civil Surgeon Dr. Ramandeep Kaur and the team led by Dr. Sandeep Singh, District Health Officer, Ludhiana, the Food Safety Department conducted a special checking and inspection drive at various sweet shops and bakeries in the district on the occasion of the Lohri festival to ensure the availability of safe and hygienic food items for the public. During the inspection, samples of tomato gravy and jam roll were taken for analysis to check their quality and compliance with food safety standards. The Food Business Operators (FBOs) were strictly instructed not to use newspapers for wrapping food items, as it can be hazardous to health. They were also advised to avoid the use of food colours in Chinese food items and ensure adherence to permitted standards only. FBOs were directed to use good quality raw materials in the preparation of food items and maintain cleanliness and hygiene in their premises. Stress was laid on the mandatory display of valid food licenses at a prominent place in their establishments. Further, the FBOs were instructed to update medical fitness certificates of food handlers and water testing reports as per the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act. The Food Safety Department reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health and appealed to all food business operators to strictly follow food safety norms, especially during the festive season.
